In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, the hottest June 28th in New York history and one week after the death of Judy Garland, gays and lesbians took a stand against a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar. The week-long Stonewall Riots broke out and the modern gay rights movement was born.
To commemorate that hot day in June, President Clinton (who has since renounced his “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy) named June the official Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
In celebration, Not a Number (1905 N. 45th St) will host Zan the Rad Dyke Plumber, who will be reading from her new book of poetry (which apparently has something of a potty name) and local author Stacey Levine, who’s “work is, at least technically, ‘surreal’” this Thursday, June 4th, from 7 – 9 pm. Munchies provided.
Drinks at Changes to follow.
Can’t make it tonight, but appreciate seeing mention of Stonewall & Zan on the blog. Thanks! Happy Pride month!
Renunciations aside, Clinton also signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which is pretty indefensible.
