We came upon this sign stapled to a telephone pole this week. It reads:
Friends of Waterway 18 and Seattle Parks Foundation invite you to join us for an afternoon of fun on Lake Union. Have some food, go for a paddle, meet your neighbors, and hear about the plans for the future of Waterway 18. Kids, families and friendly dogs welcome.
Saturday May 30th, 11 am – 3 pm
- BBQ (we’ll have some food, bring some to share)
- Go paddling with the Wakinokona Hawaiian Canoe Club
This led us to wonder: What is Waterway 18? Who are the Wakinokona Hawaiian Canoe Club? It also caused us to say Wakinokona aloud several times, just for fun.
Fortunately, several blocks later, we came upon a second poster that told us what Waterway 18 is. Apparently, it is the area just east of Gasworks (map) and is the “largest undeveloped beachfront on Lake Union”. The Friends are seeking to return it to a more natural state.
It sounds like a great idea to us. It’s a shame the whole of the north shore is boat parking. It would sure be nice to have more park along there.
