Reminder: Wallingford Farmer’s Market begins in 1 hour at Wallingford Center (3 – 7 pm, Wednesday).
Also, we got to give it to Janey, who reminded us in the comments of our last post (Wallingford Farmer’s Market) that just because some produce wasn’t picked today, that doesn’t mean it’s not local:
remember that the frozen blueberries were probably grown by Siddhu farms in Puyallup (maybe better bought in the fall, but great to add to smoothies or hot cereals), and the dried beans are probably from Stony Plains Farm in Tenino, and the dried fruit is also from another Washington farm (Rama or Pippitone). It’s all local — but it’s just been winter, and we don’t really grow anything here then. Locavores, take comfort — or move to California or Mexico!
True dat.
We can and do grow stuff here over the winter. My garden has Spinach, Lettuce, and Peas ready to eat now that I planted late last winter or fall. You can also grow Leaks and some brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, etc) over the winter as well.
Not to mention I know of at least one farm who grew meyer lemons over the winter in their greenhouse.
