Jay sent in this report and question:
Around 5pm last night (thursday), there was a fire truck and police car on Wallingford Ave and 48th, right by St. Bennedicts. Wallingford Ave was blocked off. I asked a man standing in the road (doing the blocking) about what had happened and he said that 2 cars had stopped for a pedestrian girl who was crossing the street, but that a biker went around the cars and plowed into her.
Anybody able to confirm? Is she okay?
Didn’t see anything about it on Cascade Bike Club’s new Bikewise site:
http://www.bikewise.org/
But if anyone has info on this or other bike-related accidents, I encourage you to post them to Bikewise. Hopefully, it will help steer the city toward the most dangerous locations when they have funds to make improvements
I don’t have any additional information on this instance, but wanted to share that when I was younger, I was also hit by a bicycle who went around a stopped bus and several cars to try to bypass the “back up” while I was crossing at a sidewalk. He was going 30 miles/hour down a gradual hill when he hit me in the sidewalk, flattening my face. I’ve had several surgeries and reconstruction done to correct the damage. This particular gentleman was found guilty of negligence, but had no insurance or financial means to be held accountable for his actions so I was left with almost a hundred thousand dollars of medical expenses.
I too am a bike rider and can sympathize with cyclists who struggle in traffic as well as the lobbying efforts to protect bike riders’ rights to use the roads. That being said, we all need to abide by the rules of the road when we drive and/or ride on them.
I really hope this woman is okay and any injuries she sustained will be short lived.
Can’t stand bikers. Do they follow the rules of pedestrians or cars?? I still can’t figure it out. They never stop at stop signs, but drive on the street. They think they can cross in the yellow lane, put their arm out, and expect traffic to stop so they can cross. A pedestrian would wait for the light, a car would wait for an opening in traffic. What’s the deal with bikers??
