City Fruit “promotes the cultivation of fruit in urban landscapes in order to nourish people, build community and protect the climate.” It’s an outgrowth, we take it, of Solid Ground’s Community Fruit Tree Harvest, which coordinated gleaners in the harvesting of extra fruit from people’s backyard trees for distribution to the needy.
Well, the new “throw everything in one bin” recycling program has opened up an opportunity for the group. We hear from Sarah Sanford via Kimberly Christensen:
Heads up: those plastic recycling bins that we used to put our recycled glass in would be great for storing, transporting and delivering fruit. (The City doesn’t particularly want these bins back.) […] I’ll get them to the Fruit Tree Harvest organizers. Thank you!
Got bins? Drop them off at 3827 Bagley Ave. N, just down the street from Irwin’s.
City Fruit could use some help harvesting and organizing (and, of course, more folks with fruit trees), so if you’re interested in getting involved, drop Gail Savina an e-mail: [email protected].
We’re still using plums we harvested from our neighbor’s tree last Fall in our fruit smoothies. A little yogurt, frozen fruit, a bit of juice, maybe some nutritional yeast, mmmm…so good.
Argh!! We put our bins out on the first opportunity we had and the city picked them up. I’ll let out neighborhood know about this opportunity to recycle their recycle bins.
