Any idea what happened to the Sadako statue at the Peace Park? It’s gone, and I assume that has something to do with the fixup, but not sure
The statue to which he’s referring is of Sadako Sasaki, a victim of the Hiroshima bomb. It has become a tradition to adorn the statue with origami cranes in her honor and in tribute to those who died. Peace Park is the small green area on the north end of the Roosevelt bridge.
We had no idea she was missing, but we had e-mail contacts with the city and inquired. Dewey Potter, Communications Manager with the Seattle Parks and Rec, replied:
The statue of Sadako Sasaki that “lives” in Peace Park is with the Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs right now. Someone recently tried to steal the statue and managed to loosen her from her base.
Arts and Cultural Affairs staff are working on a way to fasten her more securely to her base, and she should be back in the park by mid-April.
Thanks for the tip, David. We’re glad to hear she’s safe.
I was wondering what happened to the “peace” sign on Corliss Ave at the dead end at Seattle Tilth. Anybody know why that’s gone?
Don’t know if this link will work, but this one:
Yeah…no. That didn’t work. This one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcoughlin/1404540905/in/pool-768694@N23
The “P” of the sign is lodged in the hedge to the right, last I noticed – windstorm? vandals?
Man, I remember a few years ago when somebody hacked off poor Sadako’s arm.
Jerkasses.
They should have to fold thousands of origami cranes as punishment.
