Apparenty, car prowlers aren’t the only ones slinking around Wallingford in the pre-dawn hours. Jenny writes:
Amazon Fresh now delivers to 98103! (Apparently, this has been true since November, but I have an 11-month-old and therefore live in a news vacuum, so I just learned it last week.)We got our first delivery last week. The good people at AF arrived before dawn, set two large, colorful tubs of groceries outside our door, and tiptoed away all ninjalike without disturbing us. When we woke in the morning, there was our food! The cold stuff was kept cold with dry ice, we didn’t need to be home for any of it, and the delivery cost $5 – well worth it if you live on an upper story as we do. I am perfectly delighted to have someone else haul cat litter and laundry detergent up for me. (If you spend enough, the delivery is free.)Another great feature: Committed environmentalists can choose to have their delivery during a time when the truck is already going to be in the ‘hood (it shows you on the calendar when you’re choosing a time). Ingenious. My daughter loves the boxes too.
They’re like reverse car prowlers: they creep up all ninja-like and leave stuff for you. Maybe they’re waiting for that girl to get off the tub so they can pop out and prepare Jenny’s dinner, too.
How do the prices compare to QFC?
I’d say most things are a little cheaper. Also the produce quality is very high. Which I think it kind of has to be since you don’t get to pick it out. It’s also pretty convenient.
2 things:
1. For free scheduled delivery (1 hour window) you have to spend at least $30. I don’t think that’s a big deal.
2. For 98103 people you have to join Amazon Prime which is $80/year. This is a much bigger deal I think if you don’t order much from Amazon.
I don’t know. I haven’t decided if it’s worth it or not. They don’t really seem to have big sales that I’ve seen (they certainly don’t advertise any) so you’re not going to get, say, 68 cent/pound broccoli like you can at Fred Meyer this week. Also they don’t really have much in the way of meat, so if you want that you’re probably going to be going to the store anyway. I also like to buy bulk stuff whenever possible–forget that too.
I live in 98103 and I just had my first delivery of Amazon Fresh this morning! What a life saver. For me, I had to spend at least $75 to avoid the $5 delivery fee, but my cupboards were so bare, that wasn’t a problem. Also, I do not have an Amazon Prime account so I do not think that is necessary anymore. Everything was there, the produce was fresh, and I definitely saved money because the prices are a bit cheaper AND I didn’t have a chance to impulse buy. This has definitely changed my life.
I live in 98105–just a few blocks from the cut-off point–and I just submitted my address to be notified when they will start delivery here. I’ve been waiting two years, since my daughter was born, to take advantage of this.
Perhaps if ALL of us 98105ers add our addresses, they’ll figure out that they have a serious market here!

I’m an Amazon Fresh addict here in the 98103. They don’t just sell groceries – you can get books, electronics, hell, even a recycling bin dropped off via Amazon Fresh. Often they have a delivery window available in just three hours. The produce portions are generous and the organic produce in particular is always fresh and hearty.
In response to Anonymous: I am also a 98105 resident. It’s unfortunate that when the natural boundary between Wallingford and the U-District changed with the construction of I-5 — moving from 1st Ave NE to I-5 — the zip code didn’t move with it. It wouldn’t inconvenience Amazon any to deliver a block or two farther east, since it’s really the same neighborhood, but because they organize delivery areas by zip code we get left out. The U-District presents all kinds of potential problems as a “Fresh” market so it remains to be seen if we east-Wallingforders will ever get to benefit from this service.
We’re also 98105 (on Latona) and bummed Amazon Fresh won’t deliver to our neck of Wallingford. I submitted our address over a year ago.
Miss Constance: Their website says that you still need Amazon Prime to get deliveries in 98103. You’re sure you didn’t sign up for a free Amazon Prime trial when you signed up for Amazon Fresh? They’ll charge you in a month.
so how long before the car prowlers snatch the groceries?
I’m not an Amazon Prime member (I just checked my account info at Amazon to be extra-sure), and they delivered the groceries all the same. The Amazon Fresh website is a little confusing on this point, but as I understand it you don’t need a Prime membership to get delivery in 98103, but having one gets you free delivery on orders over $30. (Normally, delivery is $5.) For everyone, though, delivery is free on orders over $75.
Incidentally, a few days after my inaugural delivery, my mother-in-law sent us the makings for a fancy breakfast via Amazon Fresh, as a birthday gift for my husband. Great idea! But a tip for other mother-in-laws: This kind of gift does rather obligate the daughter-in-law to do the cooking. Ahem.
